About Laurie

Laurie's Mission

In today’s global economy we are increasingly connected, so collaboration across borders is becoming the norm as employees at all levels interact with colleagues and business partners around the world. However, cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings and frustrations that negatively impact productivity and team work. As a cross-cultural coach, Laurie focuses on attitude, awareness, knowledge and skills to improve understanding of key cultural differences.

Inspired by real-life experiences, including her own inter-racial marriage, Laurie will explore and help you to understand what your spouse, partner, or significant other really means in their words and behaviors to avoid hurtful miscommunication and promote a happier relationship.

Laurie’s Biography

Laurie is a Korean-American certified life and leadership coach, specializing in the areas of cross-cultural and inter-racial relationships. Laurie’s nearly 25 years of U.S. and international work experience in the food service, finance and retail industries has equipped her to identify and resolve cultural differences in personal and business relationships.  Her multilingual skills (e.g., Korean, Japanese and Thai) and her passion to help people are some of key assets that Laurie brings to assisting individuals with their relationships and companies faced with the challenge of new foreign owners.  Laurie’s ultimate goal is to help her clients achieve higher performance, become more successful, and lead happier lives.

Examples of Laurie’s Cross-Cultural Experiences:

  • As owner and head chef of Jeong Won Restaurants in Bangkok, Thailand, she trained and managed staff of 54 persons of different Asian nationalities to work closely and efficiently together.

  • Promoted traditional Korean food in Thailand and also supported spread of K-pop (Korean pop culture) culture through various media outlets (e.g., newspapers, magazines and TV food shows) and food conventions.

  • At Global One Capital, an Asian investment firm based in Bangkok, Laurie coordinated and facilitated various international and domestic investment projects, including joint ventures with Korean cosmetics, home shopping and low-cost airline companies.

  • Having worked at the Wall Street offices of two of Japan’s biggest securities firms – as Buy-Side Trader and JGB (Japanese Government Bond) Sales Assistant – she executed high-valued trades and acted as liaison between Japanese and U.S. institutional investors.

  • At the restaurant of 5-star hotel in New York City (Barclay’s at InterContinental), Laurie managed a staff of 40 unionized workers of different ethnic backgrounds and motivated them to provide exceptional customer service to the hotel’s international guests.

Examples of Laurie’s Inter-Racial Experiences:

  • Laurie immigrated to the United States from the Republic of Korea when she was 12 years old and she personally experienced a difficult process of adapting as a young Asian in Western society. Having successfully navigated her own complex inter-racial relationships (during her education, at her various jobs, and in her marriage), she coaches clients facing similar circumstances in a very intuitive, understanding and authentic manner.

  • Working at the Wall Street offices of two of Japan’s biggest securities firms, Laurie acted as a liaison between Japanese and American personnel. She helped mediate problems arising from different languages and cultures by using her strong multilingual and interpersonal skills. As a result, the teams within the firms had much improved working relationships and greater productivity.

  • Laurie was one of the founding parents of the Thai Barbarian’s Youth Rugby Club in Bangkok (for players 12-17 years old). There were many inter-racial families whose sons played on the team, and this provided Laurie with the wonderful opportunity over 8 years to consult with and help these families deal with their communication barriers and cultural differences stemming from their different races and nationalities.

Business Etiquette Training

In these training sessions Laurie will focus on teaching and demonstrating the “Do’s and Don’ts” for Westerners who conduct first-time business meetings with Korean and/or Japanese clients. Often, it can be a culture shock for foreigners to grasp the significance and importance of Korean and Japanese etiquette, social rules, and appropriate mannerisms. These East Asian countries have deeply rooted and complex rules to maintain order and harmony and these cultural factors are reflected in Korean and Japanese social customs and norms.

Samples of topics on business etiquette:

* Proper greetings – verbal expressions and taking bows

* Exchanging business cards (Myeonham/Meishi)
